Women's Tennis Competes at Virginia Tech Tournament

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Sept. 26, 2003) - East Tennessee State's women's tennis team wrapped up the first day of the Virginia Tech Tournament advancing two pairs in doubles action, but no Buccaneers were able to advance beyond the second round in singles action. Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) defeated Radford's Cristina Glas 6-1, 6-2 and was the lone Buccaneer to advance to the second round in singles. However in the second round, Irey was eliminated by Elizabeth Proctor of Wake Forest 6-0, 6-3. Six other Buccaneers lost in their first round matches, but three defeated their opponents in the consolation brackets. Doubles action proved more successful for the Bucs with two teams in the second round. Mariya Ilyina (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) defeated Mary Napier and Kristin Nordstrom (JMU) 8-2, while Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) and Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia) advanced in a default by Wake Forest. The three-day tournament, hosted by Virginia Tech will continue tomorrow with action set to begin at 8:00 a.m. and run throughout the day.
