Lady Bucs defeat No. 60 Loyola Marymount, 4-2

LOS ANGELES (March 11, 2006) - The ETSU women's tennis team defeated No. 60 Loyola Marymount, 4-2 at the LMU Tennis Center in Los Angeles on Saturday. The Lady Bucs are now 11-3 on the year while the Lions fall to 5-7 with the loss.

 

Due to inclement weather, ETSU's match was limited to singles play. The Lady Bucs dominated the singles action winning four of the six matches. In the No. 1 position, Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) was defeated by Pavla Mesterova, 6-1, 6-2 while Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) defeated Robyn Baker, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 2 position to tie the match at one. The Lions then took the lead again with Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) falling to Sladjana Kos, 6-0, 6-4 in the No. 3 position. The Lady Bucs battled back however winning in the 4, 5, and 6 positions. Senior Sandie Knight (Adamstown, Australia) defeated Patrycia Hubl, 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 slot while freshman Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) defeated Maja Sundac, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 5 position. In the No. 6 position, Vita Moskaliova (Minsk, Belarus) defeated Erin Ivey, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.

 

"LMU is a really, really good team. It was good to come back with a win after a loss at Santa Barbara," said head coach Steve Brooks, "The girls fought well today, even the ones that didn't win played well."

 

ETSU's next matches are scheduled for next Saturday, March 18 when the Lady Buccaneers travel to Nashville, Tenn. to take on Belmont and Lipscomb at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
