ETSU women's tennis defeats Tennessee Tech, 6-1

Johnson City, Tenn. (March 5, 2006) - The ETSU women's tennis team continued their winning ways, defeating the Tennessee Tech Golden Eaglettes, 6-1. The Lady Bucs improve to 9-2 on the season, while Tennessee Tech falls to 1-3.

 

 In doubles action, Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) and Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) were defeated by Alet Boonzaaier and Marina Tasheva, 8-4 in No. 1 doubles. In the No. 2 position Sandie Knight (Adamstown, Australia) and Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) defeated Margot Carter and Kay Ngiam, 8-1, while Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Vita Moskaliova (Minsk, Belarus) defeated Marina Ruiz de Gauna and Maia Semerdjieva, 8-3 in the No. 3 slot to clench the doubles point. 

 

In singles action, Masha Ilina was defeated by Alet Boonzaaier, 4-6, 7-5 (8) at the No. 1 position, while Olya Batsula defeated Marina Tasheva, 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 position. In No. 3 singles, Sandie Knight defeated Margot Carter, 6-0, 6-4. Freshman Tara Byrne defeated Marina Ruiz de Gauna, 6-1, 7-6 at the No. 4 slot, and in the No. 5 position, senior Sylwia Ziolkowska defeated Kay Ngiam, 6-0, 6-0, while Vita Moskaliova defeated Maia Semerdjieva, 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles position.

 

 "We played well today. We had a little hiccup at the No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles. Tech is very tough at the 1, 2, and 3 positions. Hopefully Elena (Volobueva) will be back in the lineup soon.," said head coach Steve Brooks.

 

 ETSU women's tennis team hits the road as the travel to the Golden State to take on UC-Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, and Loyola Marymount. Their next match will be against UC-Riverside in Riverside, Calif. with the action beginning at 2 p.m.
