Ilina advances in ITA Tournament

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (October 14, 2005) -  The ETSU women's tennis team continued action at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships at the University of North Carolina on Friday.  Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) defeated Ashley Murray of Charlotte, 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the round of sixteen tomorrow.

 

"I was very impressed with the way Ilina played," said head women's tennis coach Steve Brooks.  "I'm looking forward to her match tomorrow."

 

Sandie Knight (Adamstown, Australia) lost to Carolina Sage of Clemson, 6-2, 6-2.  Sylwia Ziolkowski (Warsaw, Poland) lost to Tara Iyer of Duke, 6-4, 6-1.  

 

In doubles, Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) and Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) lost to a top ranked Duke team, 8-5.  Also in doubles, Ziolkowski/Ilina lost to a team from Wake Forest, 8-3.


Play continues tomorrow at UNC beginning at 9.
