BRISTOL, Tenn. (April 19, 2008) - In a match that was delayed for several hours due to poor weather conditions in the Johnson City area the ETSU women's tennis team dropped the Stetson Hatters, 4-0 late Saturday evening at the Bristol Indoor Raquet Club to advance to the 2008 Atlantic Sun championship match. The Lady Bucs improve to 14-10 overall, while the Hatters fall to 14-11.

 

ETSU took doubles point to earn a 1-0 advantage. Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) cruised past Valentina Galbarini and Unnati Purushotham, 8-3 in the No. 1 position, while Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) and Whitney Trotter (Guadalajara, Mexico) dropped Anna Leonenko and Natalie Gorham, 8-1 in the No. 3 slot. The No. 2 doubles match was called when ETSU took the point.

 

The Lady Bucs again dominated in singles action dropping Stetson in straight sets in the No. 3, 1, and 2 positions. Conference tournament play is suspended when one team has clinched the match.  In the No. 3 slot Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) was first off the court as she dropped Unnati Purushotham, 6-2, 6-0, while Yevgeniya Stupak breezed by Valentina Galbarini in the No. 1 slot. In the second position Olya Batsula dropped Breanna Atkinson to clinch the match.

 

The Lady Bucs will face top-seeded Jacksonville in tomorrow's championship match. It will be a rematch  of last year's title match. When ETSU met Jacksonville earlier this season the Dolphins came away with a tough 5-2 victory. The Lady Bucs will look for revenge and their second Atlantic Sun conference championship title as well as their second NCAA berth.
