Sunday, October 28, 2007

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Oct. 28, 2007) - The ETSU women's tennis team concluded play at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of South Carolina on Sunday. The doubles teams of Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine), Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) and Whitney Trotter (Guadalajara, Mexico), Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) each finished third in their respective flights.

Competing in the A-1 doubles bracket Stupak and Volobueva cruised past Laurel Bolesky and Amy Pazahanick of Coastal Carolina, 8-3 to take third place in the flight. In the C-1 doubles flight Trotter and Voinea joined forces to take down Mary Beth Gunn and Martie Wahl of UT-Martin, 8-5 for a third place finish.

In the A-1 singles bracket Stupak fell to No. 36 Gira Schofield of South Carolina, 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals. Due to injury she was unable to compete in the third place match against College of Charleston's Laura Borza.

In the B-1 singles draw Byrne breezed by Armstrong Atlantic's Gabriella Kovacs in semifinal action, 6-2, 6-1 before falling to Lindsey Ballard of Chattanooga in a hard fought three-set match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 for the title.

In the B-3 consolation flight Volobueva defeated Georgia Southern's Ali Beavers, 7-5, 6-7(5), (10-6) while  in the B-4 consolation bracket Voinea fell to Hayley Baird of Wofford, 6-1, 6-3.

Competing in the C-1 consolation bracket Trotter dropped Shea Huxtable of Georgia Southern, 6-2, 6-3, while Vita Moskaliova (Minsk, Belarus) defeated Hannah Howerton of Erskine College, 6-2, 6-1 in the C-2 consolation draw.

Overall it was a very good weekend. In Yevgeniya's match she has been cramping up these last few days but she still played well against a very good player from South Carolina. Tara also played very well and sometimes when you're competing for a title at a major event like this it is easy to get distracted. She won the first game but then her opponent stepped up her game but I'm still very proud of the way Tara played," said head coach Steve Brooks. "I'm really looking forward to making some changes within the team and hopefully we can do it and stick with it so we can have a great spring season."

The Lady Bucs will return to action in January as they participate in the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament on 18th. Keep up with the Lady Bucs by visiting www.ETSUBucs.com.
