Lady Bucs tennis opens fall season undefeated
Friday, September 07, 2007 WILMINGTON, N.C. (Sept. 7, 2007) - The ETSU women's tennis team opened its fall season with a bang as three members of the squad went undefeated on the first day of the UNC Wilmington-Country Club of Landfall Collegiate Tennis Invitational. Competing in the Teal Flight, sophomore Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) defeated UNC's Sophie Grabinski, 2-6, 6-0, 10-8 before defeating Jessica Brouwer of Virginia Tech, 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals. In the Navy flight senior Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) received a first round bye and then went on to defeat Hayley Wahl of Elon, 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the semifinal round, while newcomer Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) picked up her first two collegiate wins defeating UNC Greensboro's Courtney Akel, 3-6, 6-3, 11-9 and Kristin Gordon of East Carolina, 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the semifinal round. "Overall we had a good first day. We went undefeated today and all of three of the girls are in the semifinals tomorrow," said head coach Steve Brooks. "It's a really good and fun tournament and we're having a good time down here." Competition will resume Saturday with doubles competition in the morning and singles competition in the afternoon.
