ROCK HILL, S.C. (April 6, 2010) - After winning its fourth Atlantic Sun Conference Regular Season title Saturday, the No. 61 ETSU women's tennis team could not overcome a slow start as the Lady Bucs fell at No. 71 Winthrop 5-2 Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Courts in Rock Hill, S.C.

With the its lost ETSU fell to a respectable18-4 mark, while the Lady Eagles improved to 9-8.

"Well today we came out flat," said head coach Steve Brooks. "After this weekend I know the girls were still tired after us battling for the championship and that in return showed because we didn't play well early in doubles. That lack of energy really hurt us this afternoon. That being said, we just need to rest, regroup and get ready for the rest of the season and tournament."

After ETSU lost the doubles point, the Lady Bucs rebounded as senior Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) made quick work of Elizaveta Zaytseva at No. 1 singles. After winning the first set 6-1, the senior captain took a 40-15 lead at 6-5 in the second set, when Zaytseva suddenly retired with only one more point to go.

The Lady Bucs other victory on the day came as junior Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) rolled past Sara Abutovic 7-6, 6-4.

Despite Winthrop winning the remaining four singles contests, ETSU did play close against the Lady Eagles as junior Tara Sheets (Gate City, Va.) and freshman Diana Navrosksta (Kyiv, Ukraine) fell in tight matches at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles positions. Sheets dropped a heartbreaking 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 match to Lisa Wilkinson, while Navrosksta barely lost to Giovanna Portiolli 7-6 (8-5), 6-4.

ETSU returns to action for the final time in the regular season as the Lady Bucs take on regional rival UNC Asheville with 1 p.m. match Saturday in Asheville, N.C.
