Women's tennis has strong day of competition

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 17, 2010) - The ETSU women's tennis team had a strong showing on the opening day of the ETSU Invitational while other members of the team had a successful day at the USC Upstate Invitational, Friday afternoon.

"I was very pleased with the way our team performed in their first action of the year," said ETSU women's assistant coach Travis Sandlandt. "We some advance to the finals so that was good to see and we will be looking to pick up some more wins tomorrow."

Diana Navrotska
(Kviv, Ukraine) had a strong showing in singles action as she won both of her matches on the afternoon. She first defeated Neesha Thrum of Cumberlands, 7-5, 6-1 before knocking off Kayla Kelly of Milligan, 6-2, 6-2. Navrotska will play in the A flight finals tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.

Tara Sheets
(Gate City, Va.) won her only match of the day as she knocked off Shena Joseph of LMU, 6-3. 6-3. Sheets will play in the B flight finals tomorrow at 12 p.m.

Freshman Giulia Andreazza won both of her singles matches on the day as she was competing in her first ever collegiate event. Andreazza will also play in the finals tomorrow afternoon. Andreazza also teamed with Jessica Ratliff (Bristol, Tenn.) to earn a quick victory in doubles action. The duo defeated Strong/Collett of Cumberlands, 8-0.

Kelly Holtzhausen
(Johannesburg, South Africa) opened up her first round of play with a victory in the A flight singles bracket. Holtzhausen defeated Kelsey Love of Lenoir-Rhyne, 6-1, 6-1. She will take on Sarah Evans of Wofford in the next round tomorrow.

Karina Kedzo
(Puerta Ordaz, Venezuela) also had a strong showing on the opening day as she defeated Paige Oelke of Presbyterian College, 6-2, 6-0. Kedzo will take on Borislava Nikolova of conference rival Campbell tomorrow in the next round.

The Bucs also got a victory from Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) in the A flight as she knocked off Alessandra Dzuba of Georgia Southern, 6-1, 6-1. Jaime will meet Cristina Limantoro of Presbyterian in the next round tomorrow. Jaime and Kedzo won their opening round doubles match before falling in the second round.

Andra Voinea
(Brasov, Romania) will open up play tomorrow as she had a first round bye in the B flight singles today. She will take on Therese Lagerkvist of Kennesaw State tomorrow. Voinea and Holtzhausen won their first two doubles matches and will advance to the next round tomorrow.

The ETSU Invitational will continue tomorrow at 10 a.m. from the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center. The USC Upstate Fall Classic will resume tomorrow morning with today's winners playing at the Upstate Tennis Complex and the consolation tournament taking place at Wofford College.
