BURLINGTON, N.C. (Oct. 9, 2010) - ETSU senior Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) and freshman Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) each won two singles matches and a doubles match to advance to the finals of their respective brackets at the Elon Fall Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Voinea started out the day with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Kim-Lea Dinh of Appalachian State, and then shut out Lauren Sessoms of Elon 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the finals of the A-3 singles flight. Voinea will take on Sarah Moomah of Longwood in the finals tomorrow at 10 a.m.
"Andra is playing in her third straight singles final tomorrow and I cannot recall anyone achieving that kind of accomplishment in fall competition," said ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant.
Andreazza defeated Jacqui McGuirk of UNC Asheville 6-0, 6-0 before knocking off Lera Klintsevich of Liberty in the semifinals 6-2, 6-3. Andreazza will face Nicky Schon of UNC Asheville tomorrow in the B-1 singles flight tomorrow at 10 a.m.
The two also earned a victory in doubles as they knocked off the Appalachian State team of Ansari/Dinh 8-6. They will play in the finals tomorrow against Stavreva/Sessoms of Elon in the A-3 doubles final.
"It is great that Giulia will play her first singles final tomorrow. I knew that she was going to break through very shortly as she has been improving drastically."
In doubles, two out of the three ETSU teams advanced to the finals. Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) and Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) defeated Borislava Nikolova and Heather Robinson of Campbell 8-2 in the semifinals. Jamie/Kedzo will take on the Elon team of Berne/Johnston tomorrow at 8 a.m. in the finals of the A-1 doubles flight.
"I am very pleased to have two doubles teams in the finals tomorrow. I believe that we now understand what we need to do and the tactical aspects to play in order to get the job done and put victories up on the board."
