Women's tennis falls at No. 52 Wake Forest, 7-0

Sunday, January 30, 2011

(Jan. 30, 2011) - After opening the season with two straight wins, the ETSU women's tennis team dropped its first match of the season to No. 52 Wake Forest, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at the Indoor Tennis Center.
"I think today against a great Wake Forest team we just got outplayed in a couple of spots," said ETSU assistant women's tennis coach Travis Sandlant. "We had some moments where we played well, but we just gave away too many free points and against a quality team like Wake Forest we just can't afford to do that and expect to win."
Wake Forest quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead following doubles play. The No. 83 ranked doubles team of Martina Pavelec and Kayla Duncan defeated Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) and Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela), 8-1, at the No. 1 position. Just moments later, the Demon Deacons claimed the doubles point as Anna Mydlowska and Brigita Bercyte rolled past Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) and Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France), 8-2, at the No. 3 spot.
The Bucs did, however, pick up a win in doubles action as Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Tara Sheets (Gate City, Va.) earned a thrilling 8-7 win over Emilee Malvehy and Ryann Cutillo at the No. 2 position.

"A positive from today was that Kelly and Tara played an excellent doubles match against a very solid opponent," said Sandlant.

With Wake Forest already in front 1-0, the Demon Deacons rode the momentum from a sold doubles effort into singles play. No. 62 ranked Pavelec quickly defeated Jaime, 6-1, 6-0, at the top singles position. Just moments later, Malvehy defeated Wieliczko, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 3 position to put the Demon Deacons up 3-0.
At the No. 2 position, Duncan earned a 6-3, 6-3, straight set victory over Holtzhausen to clinch the victory for the Demon Deacons. Kedzo, Diana Navrostska (Lviv, Ukraine) and Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) each fell in straight sets as well to close out the afternoon.
Wake Forest improved its record to 2-1 on the season, while ETSU dropped its first contest of the season and fell to 2-1.
"We have a week or so before our next match so we are going to work on some things this week and get ready for another ranked team," added Sandlant. "Hopefully we will be able to come away with a win this time."
The Bucs next head north beginning on Feb. 11 where they will take on Columbia in New York. The team will also face No. 47 Yale just two days later.
