Holtzhausen earns first A-Sun Player of the Week honor
Wednesday, February 02, 2011
MACON, Ga. - After a solid opening to the season in both singles and doubles, ETSU senior Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa) has been named Atlantic Sun player of the week, the league office announced on Wednesday.
"Kelly is certainly deserving of this great honor after her solid play to start the season," said ETSU women's tennis assistant coach Travis Sandlant. "She is a strong player for us and hopefully she will earn many more accolades this season."
Holtzhausen opened up the week with two wins against Eastern Kentucky, which helped lead the Bucs to their second victory of the year. She started the day by teaming up with partner Tara Sheets (Gate City, Va.) to defeat Anouk Faure and Sophie O'Neill in doubles play, 8-6. Later on in the day, Holtzhausen knocked off Saioa Oscoz at the No. 2 singles position, 6-4, 7-5.
On Sunday, the Bucs ran into their toughest test of the season at No. 52 Wake Forest. ETSU was defeated 7-0, but Holtzhausen and Sheets teamed up once again to earn a doubles victory. The duo knocked off Emilee Malvehy and Ryann Cutillo, 8-7, at the No. 2 position.
This was the first Atlantic Sun player of the week honor for Holtzhausen. In addition, this is the first A-Sun player of the week award for the Bucs since Yevgeniya Stupak won the award on Mar. 4, 2009. Holtzhausen did win two OVC player of the week awards when she played at Tennessee Tech.
The 2-1 Bucs will be back in action on Feb. 11 as they travel to New York for a match against Columbia. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. ETSU will then take on No. 47 Yale two days later at 11 a.m.
