Women's tennis falls at Virginia Tech

Sunday, March 13, 2011

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Mar. 13, 2011) - The ETSU women's tennis team wrapped a long three-match weekend with a 7-0 loss to Virginia Tech, Sunday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

With the victory, Virginia Tech moves to 9-6 on the season, while ETSU drops to 6-6 on the year. The Hokies were the second ACC team that the Bucs have faced this season, after taking on nationally ranked Wake Forest earlier in the year. The loss also snaps a four-match winning streak for the Bucs.
"Overall today was a disappointing day," said ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant. "As a team we had a huge opportunity to win, but we did not show up to play and compete at all. Unfortunately it seemed like we lacked the belief to win and did not live up to our true potential."
The Hokies took a quick 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Virginia Tech took won the first two matches at the No. 3 and No. 2 positions to take the point. However, the Bucs did get a victory at the No. 1 position as Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) and Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) defeated Yasmin Hamza and Holly Johnson, 8-5.
In singles play, the Hokies gained control early on and maintained their strong play as they won all six singles matches. Virginia Tech won four of the six matches in straight sets. Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) won the first set against Isel Martinez-Marcos, 6-4, but Martinez-Marcos rallied to take the next two sets to pick up the victory.
The closest match of the day may have been at the No. 3 position as ETSU's Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) and Virginia Tech's Tea Ivanovic each won a set to force a tiebreaker. Ivanovic won a tight tiebreaker, 10-7, to pick up the victory.
The Bucs hit the road on Friday, Mar. 18 and Saturday, Mar. 19 when they travel to Campbell and USC Upstate in Atlantic Sun action. The Bucs take on Campbell on Friday at 2 p.m. before taking on USC Upstate on Sunday at 2 p.m.
