ETSU tennis serves up fall season

Men head to Southern Intercollegiate, women to UNC Wilmington

ATHENS, Ga. and WILMINGTON, N.C. (Sept. 6, 2012) – The ETSU men’s and women’s tennis teams begin the fall season on Friday, as the men’s side heads to Athens, Ga. for the Southern Intercollegiate and the women’s squad travels to Wilmington, N.C. for the UNCW/Landfall Fall Tennis Invitational.

The Southern Intercollegiate Championships will be hosted by the University of Georgia for the 45th time this weekend. Student-athletes from 24 different collegiate men’s tennis teams will compete for titles in various singles and doubles draws, with championship matches scheduled to conclude on Monday.

The 24 participating collegiate tennis teams include Armstrong Atlantic, The Citadel, Clemson, ETSU, Florida, Florida Gulf Coast, Furman, Georgia, Georgia College, Georgia Southern, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Liberty, Lipscomb, Mercer, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, North Florida, Presbyterian, UT Chattanooga, Tennessee Tech, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech.

Seniors Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) and Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay), juniors Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) and Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venezuela), along with sophomores Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Fernando Amon and Ricardo Pabon (Bogota, Columbia) will represent the Bucs at UGA.

The UNCW/Landfall Fall Tennis Invitational will be hosted by UNC Wilmington at the Country Club of Landfall’s Tennis Center. Play begins Friday, with championship matches scheduled to conclude on Sunday.

The tournament features four women’s singles and two women’s doubles flights. Competitors from UNCW, Coastal Carolina, VCU and West Virginia will join the Buccaneers in Wilmington.

Competing in the singles A draw for ETSU will be newcomer Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece). Redshirt freshman Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) will compete for a title in the B draw, with first-year Buc Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) taking on the competition in the C bracket. Another of ETSU’s newcomers, Larn McShane (Hobart Tasmania, Australia) enters play as the No. 1 seed in the D flight.

In doubles play, Gerbasi and Choo team up in the A fight, while McShane and Kolovou take on the B flight as the No. 2 seed.
