Gerbasi wins singles title to close out UNCW-Landfall Invitational

Sunday, September 09, 2012

WILMINGTON, N.C. (Sept. 9, 2012) – Freshman Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) earned the ETSU women’s tennis team’s first singles title of the 2012 fall season, defeating Charleston Southern’s Susita Das 7-5, 6-0 in the C flight final on Sunday at the UNCW-Landfall Invitational.

Das took on West Virginia’s Hailey Barrett early Sunday morning, winning in three sets, 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-3, to earn a spot against the ETSU newcomer in the final. The youngest member of the ETSU roster handled Das in straight sets, completing a weekend of two titles for the new-look Buccaneers. Other new ETSU faces Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece) and Larn McShane (Hobart Tasmania, Australia) took home the double B flight championship on Saturday.

“This was a great start to the year from the whole team,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “It was a tough tournament with some nationally ranked programs. For Anna to win the singles today was great for her confidence as a freshman.

“Lyn Yee [Choo] also showed some flashes of brilliance in the last few matches. I’m excited to see what else the team can do and can’t wait to see them reach their full potential.”

Redshirt freshman Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) had an impressive victory on Sunday, taking down Charleston Southern’s Alexandra Walters 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7). Walters went undefeated for CSU last fall.

The Buccaneers take next weekend off before heading to the USC Upstate Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C. on Friday, Sept. 21.
