Kolovou, Dahbi winners on day one of Wake Forest Invitational

Friday, October 05, 2012

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Oct. 5, 2012) – Senior Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece) and junior Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco) each battled back from a set down to advance to their respective quarterfinals and highlight the ESTU women’s tennis team’s performance on Friday at the Wake Forest Invitational.

Kolovou, competing in the top singles flight, took out a conference competitor in Stetson’s Sara Lazarevic 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, and Dahbi rallied past Appalachian State’s Gabby Gabriel 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The other Buccaneers competing in Flight B did not fare the same, as App State’s Clare Cox got by Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and Elon’s Bryn Khoury defeated Anna Gerbasi (Mexico City, Mexico).

“Antonia and Salma grinded out some tough wins today,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “They may not have played their greatest tennis, but they still got the job done and their experience showed today. It was pleasing to see.

“Tessie [Choo] and Anna made things a little more complicated than needed in doubles, but saved a match point against Charleston to make the semis.”

Choo and Gerbasi won each of their two doubles matches in the top doubles draw, advancing to Saturday's semifinals to take on Wake Forest's Talbert and Gardiner.
