Buccaneers advance to doubles semifinals

SARASOTA, Fla. (Nov. 8, 2012) – The ETSU women’s tennis freshman duo of Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) pulled off a huge win on opening day of the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic, defeating the top doubles seed and nationally ranked duo from Oklahoma State to advance into the semifinals.

Choo and Gerbasi began doubles play by defeating Mississippi State’s Roseline Dion and Lien Van Geel in the round of 16, 8-6. That win put the young Buccaneers in the quarterfinals against the ITA’s No. 14 ranked doubles team from Oklahoma State, Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana. The big-time rankings mattered little to the Bucs, as they moved on past the Cowgirls in the same score from the first round, 8-6.

“That’s probably the biggest win in our program’s history,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “I couldn’t be more proud of these girls at the moment. They are playing to their potential and I look forward to tomorrow.”

Singles didn’t go as well, as Choo, Gerbasi and senior Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece) went a combined 1-5. Gerbasi picked up the only win, defeating Mississippi State’s Sarai Flores in a match tiebreak 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 1-0 (10-8).
