First meeting since Feb. 2006

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 2, 2013) – The ETSU women’s tennis team will be in the Music City on Super Bowl Sunday, as it opens up the dual season against MTSU inside the Nashboro Village Athletic Club at noon (ET).

When the first serve is struck, it will have been a day shy of seven years since ETSU (0-0) and MTSU (1-3) last squared off. On Feb. 4, 2006, the Lady Buccaneers got the better of the Blue Raiders, 5-2, at the Racquet Club of Murfreesboro. Former Lady Buc Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) – 2006 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year – led the charge with a, 6-2, 6-2, victory over Marlene Chemin at No. 1 singles, while also earning a doubles win in the No. 2 match alongside Sandie Knight (Adamstown, Australia), 8-3.

This time around, the two sides will boast completely different rosters. Heading to Nashville for the Lady Bucs will be senior Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece); juniors Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil), Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco), Sofia Espana (Mexico City, Mexico) and Larn McShane (Hobart Tasmania, Australia); sophomore Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn.); and freshmen Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela).

“We’re excited to get the dual season underway,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “MTSU is a tough school and we look forward to the challenge. Hopefully, we get off to the right start.”

The Lady Buccaneers crashed courses with the Blue Raiders over the fall, meeting three separate times in late September at the Hokie Fall Invite. Both singles decisions went to MTSU, while the Lady Bucs earned a doubles win. Nayara Moraes defeated McShane, 6-2, 6-0 in the C Flight and Irina Constantinide defeated Espana 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4 in the D Flight championship. In doubles, Kolovou and McShane got revenge by defeating Yuiri Nomoto and Flavia Nagayama, 9-8 (7-5).
