ASHEVILLE, N.C. (Feb. 21, 2013) – The ETSU women’s tennis team hopes to put an end to a two-match skid on Friday, heading one hour south on I-26 to the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown to take on the Bulldogs at 2 p.m.

ETSU (2-2) had a tough weekend, losing close, 4-3, decisions to both Akron and then-nationally ranked Oregon at the Zips’ LaTuchie Tennis Center. The defeats were the Lady Buccaneers’ first and second of the season, but they hope to bounce back against a UNC Asheville (4-2) team that is a perfect 4-0 at home.

Leading the way to this point for ETSU has been senior newcomer Antonia Kolvou (Larisa, Greece), who is on a six-match winning streak in singles and stands at 12-8 overall on the 2012-13 campaign. Kolovou’s record also includes a perfect 4-0 mark through the Lady Bucs’ first four dual matches.

On the doubles side, the duo of junior newcomers Sofia Espana (Mexico City, Mexico) and Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco) will hope to stay hot and help deliver a win. Espana and Dahbi have won their last four matches to begin the dual season 4-0, while carrying an overall record of 8-3. Meanwhile, ETSU’s regionally ranked freshman duo of Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) will try and recover from dropping both their sets over the weekend.

UNC Asheville may be 4-0 at home, but only one of those wins has come against a Division I school, defeating USC Upstate, 4-3. The other three were against Lees-McRae, Mars Hill and most recently Augusta State.

ETSU has taken the last two meetings in the series history. The two schools were scheduled to meet last season, but had the match postponed due to rain. In the spring of 2011, the Lady Bucs defeated the Bulldogs, 4-3, in Johnson City, and in 2010 were victorious in the last meeting in Asheville, 6-1.

A full recap of the match will be posted Friday night on ETSUBucs.com.
