Kolovou extends win streak to eight

BOONE, N.C. (Feb. 23, 2013) – The ETSU women’s tennis team completed the weekend road sweep Saturday at the Yonahlossee Racquet Club, easing past Appalachian State, 6-1.

ETSU (4-2) was led by senior Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece), who extended her singles winning streak to eight matches with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of ASU’s (6-2) Clare Cox in the No. 2 hole. Kolovou also paired with Larn McShane (Hobart Tasmania, Australia) to win, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles.

“This was a quality win,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “Appalachian State is a team with a lot of fight. There were many times they tried to claw back in the match, but the effort by our girls shut it down.”

Freshman duo Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) and Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) moved to 14-8 overall, earning an, 8-6, victory in the top doubles match. The Lady Bucs completed the doubles sweep at No. 3 with Sofia Espana (Mexico City) and Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco) winning, 8-4.

Ellie Linsell was the lone Mountaineer to take a point. Linsell defeated Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil), 6-4, 6-4, in the top singles match. The rest of the Lady Bucs were all victorious. Gerbasi, Choo and Espana all won in straight sets, while Dahbi outlasted Jessica Thaggart in a match tiebreak, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5).

The ETSU women’s tennis team will hold on to its two-match winning streak for quite some time. ETSU’s next match is not scheduled until Sunday, March 10, when it heads to UNC Wilmington.
