Choo gets marquee win over nationally-ranked opponent

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (Nov. 9, 2013) - In the team's final weekend of fall play, junior Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) gave the ETSU women's tennis squad a premiere win to build upon heading into spring competition.

Choo picked up a marquee win on the second day of the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic, beating 35th-ranked Britney Sanders of Notre Dame, 6-0, 4-6, 10-2.

The win marked the highest-ranked opponent Choo has even beaten.

"Today's win will give Tessie the belief that she can win against these top-ranked players," ETSU head coach Travis Sandlant said. "She has played these types of players close all year, so it's good to see her finally pull one out."

Teammate Ana Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) was unable to overcome a narrow first set loss, falling to Princeton's Sivan Crems, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.

Over the two days of competition in the tournament, Choo has amassed a singles record of 2-1, while Gerbasi went 0-3. Together, Choo and Gerbasi competed in doubles play, falling to Notre Dame's Molly O'Koniewski and Julie Sabacinski, 6-2, 7-5.

Despite the mixed results of the weekend, Sandlant is looking forward to building upon these performances as the team looks ahead to spring competition.

"It's the last tournament for the year," Sandlant said. "We are going to stay fit and work on our explosiveness before we start back up for spring."

RESULTS

Sivan Crems (Princeton) d. Gerbasi, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1

Choo d. No. 35 Britney Sanders (Notre Dame), 6-0, 4-6, 10-2
