Championship season comes to a close with loss at No. 5 Duke

Friday, May 09, 2014

DURHAM, N.C. (May 9, 2014) - The ETSU women's tennis team's championship season came to a close Friday afternoon, as the Bucs fell to No. 5 and host Duke, 4-0, on the Blue Devils' home court in Durham, N.C.

ETSU finished the season winning the season winning 11 of their final 13 matches en route to winning the program's fourth Atlantic Sun Championship and clinching a spot in the NCAA Championship.

The Blue Devils (25-4) were too much for ETSU to overcome, as Duke clinched the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots before sealing the victory with wins at No. 1, No. 4, and No. 6 singles.

"We played some good tennis today," ETSU coach Travis Sandlant said. "We competed hard and were very competitive during the doubles and some of the singles. Unfortunately, we couldn't sustain the level of play that Duke consistently played, and that is why they are one of the top teams in the country."

The fifth-ranked Blue Devils, appearing in their 25th consecutive NCAA Championship, will take on No. 30 South Carolina Saturday, May 10 for a trip to the Round of 16.

Next season, the Bucs will return three of the team's six players who saw action in Atlantic Sun play: Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn.), Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia), and Ana Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela). Choo was earned a spot on the All-Atlantic Sun First Team, while Brumit and Gerbasi were named to the Second Team.

Seniors Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil), Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco), and Sophia Espana (Mexico City, Mexico) will depart from the program after helping ETSU to an Atlantic Sun Championship in their senior seasons. Andreazza and Dahbi were named to the All-Atlantic Sun First Team and Second Team, respectively.

"We have some positive signs for the program," Sandlant said. "The seniors have helped build this program and have set a high standard to keep building upon."
