WILMINGTON, N.C. (Oct. 5, 2014) - The ETSU women's tennis team put the finishing touches on a dominant weekend outing at the UNC Wilmington Fall Invite in Wilmington, N.C., Sunday, with all four Buccaneer players winning titles in their respective singles flights.
Overall, ETSU won five of the tournamen'ts six events: all four singles flights, along with the B Doubles flight.
"It was a great weekend to come away with five titles out of the six events," ETSU coach Travis Sandlant said. "We couldn't be any more pleased with the results."
Senior Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and junior Ana Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) remained unbeaten during fall competition, with Choo defeating Coastal Carolina's Honami Yazawa, 6-0, 6-3, to win the A1 Singles flight title, and Gerbasi knocking off CCU's Sara Bonder, 7-6, 6-2, to take home the B1 Singles crown.
The title is Gerbasi's second of the fall, as the Caracas, Venezuela, native also took home the White Singles flight title at the USC Upstate Fall Classic in late September.
Meanwhile, ETSU freshmen Ionna Markesini (Athens, Greece) and Jayde Viccars (Glen Waverely, Australia) each picked up victories, as well.
Markesini defeated Romane Delay of CCU, 7-5, 6-3, to win the A2 singles title, while Viccars earned her second come-from-behind, three-set win in as many days, taking down UNC Wilmington's Miller Hales, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
The Bucs' next action of the fall will be at the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals in Knoxville, Tenn., and Sandlant emphasized the need for is squad to remain focused on what lies ahead.
"We know it's only going to get tougher from here out with regionals two weeks away," Sandlant said. "We will expect some very tough matches."
The ITA Ohio Valley Regionals will begin Friday, Oct. 17 and conclude Tuesday, Oct. 21.
