Choo suffers first setback of season as Bucs wrap up play at ITA Ohio Valley Regionals
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 20, 2014) - In a battle of unbeatens, ETSU's Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) was edged in a three-set match Monday, marking her first setback of the fall, and concluding her quarterfinal run in the USTA ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.
After knocking off opponents from UK, Miami, and Xavier to earn a spot in the quarterfinals of the singles main draw, Choo, who entered Monday's match unbeaten, went toe-to-toe with Astra Sharma of Vanderbilt, who was also sporting an unblemished record.
Choo started strongly, taking the first set, 6-4; however, was unable to hold off a rally by Sharma, who went on to win each of the next two sets, 6-2, 6-4.
The loss was Choo's first of the season.
"Tessie [Choo] had an exceptional tournament," ETSU coach Travis Sandlant said. "She had a chance to make it great, but fell short. She and Sharma had a tough match of high quality.
Four ETSU players, including Choo, competed in the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals. Ana Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela), Jayde Viccars (Glen Waverely, Australia), and Ionna Markesini (Athens, Greece) also competed in the tournament.
"Overall, we had a great team showing this year," Sandlant said. "We competed well with some big colleges and pulled out a few victories also."
Earlier in the tournament, Choo and Markesini teamed up to advance to the quarterfinals of the doubles main draw. In the opening round, the ETSU doubles tandem downed Memphis' duo of Anki Wind and Alyssa Hibberd. Hibberd was ranked as high as No. 38 nationally in doubles play last season.
Having finished up at the ITA Regionals in Knoxville, Tenn., ETSU will continue fall competition next weekend as the Bucs travel back to Knoxville to take part in the University of Tennessee Fall Invite.
