JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 10, 2015) – The East Tennessee State University women’s tennis team announced the signing of two student-athletes for the 2015-16 season Thursday. Yi Chi Ma (Taipei, China) and Marina Espana (Castellar Del Valles, Spain) join the program after successful prep careers.

Chi has an ITF junior ranking of 322 and has won eight ITF junior double titles. The Taipei native is ranked fourth among the Taiwan U18 rankings. She has competed in the Asia and Oceania World Junior Championships and she has been a runner-up at the national high school games.

“We are excited to have our first Taiwanese recruit to ETSU,” said ETSU head coach Travis Sandlant. “Yi Chi brings world class experience to our team. I believe she will have an immediate impact on the line up. Her doubles experience and success is going to be great help to the team.”

Guinart has an ITF ranking of 698. She has won Leeuwenbergh ITF 4 Junior Championship and the 14 and 18 under Catalonia Championship. She is ranked No. 29 in Spain and made the round of 16 in the WTA $10,000 Palmanova (Mallorca).

“Marina is very hard working and has a lot of talent,” said Sandlant. “I’m looking forward to her career as a Buccaneer.  Her WTA experience will be an asset to her settling in quickly to college tennis ranks.”

Chi, Espana and the rest of the Bucs open the 2015 fall season tomorrow at the UNC Wilmington Invitational.
