WILMINGTON, N.C. (Sept. 11, 2015) – The East Tennessee State University women’s tennis team opened fall competition Friday at the UNC Wilmington Invitational. The Bucs went 4-4 in singles competition against Big 10 opponent, Wisconsin, while going 2-1 in doubles against UNC Wilmington.

“It was a pretty pleasing first day,” remarked ETSU head coach Travis Sandlant. “To win two of the three doubles and then to come away with a 4-4 tie with a strong big 10 team like Wisconsin gives us a lot of hope for this season.”

Freshmen Yi Chi Ma (Taipei, China) and Marina Espana (earned their first collegiate wins as they earned wins in both singles and doubles.

“With the freshmen Marina and Yi getting their first win, it is not only great for their confidence but also the team’s moving forward,” said Sandlant.

The Buccaneers will be back in action tomorrow in day two of the invite. The Bucs will face Campbell in singles beginning at 9 a.m. and will close out the day with doubles against Wisconsin at 11 a.m.
