JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 29, 2016) – The ETSU women’s tennis team will open its 2016 season this weekend with a pair of home matches at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex against USC Upstate Saturday and Appalachian State Sunday. Both matches are set for a 1 p.m. start time.
ETSU, which has 76-9 home record since the beginning of the 2003-04 season, had quite a few stellar performances during the fall season. Leading the way was freshman Marina Espana (Castellar Del Valles, Spain) who posted a 10-3 mark in singles play. Senior Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia), who was 8-5, and Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece), who was 8-3, also posted winning records in the fall. In addition, Choo comes into the season ranked No. 12 in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional rankings.
USC Upstate’s record sits at 0-1 so far this season with the one defeat coming against Furman, 7-0. ETSU, who used to be an Atlantic Sun rival of USC Upstate, has won seven consecutive matches against the Spartans. The last time the Bucs lost to the Spartans was April 9, 2008, 5-2.
Like USC Upstate, Appalachian State comes into this weekend’s play with a 0-1 record. The Mountaineers began their season with a 6-1 home loss against College of Charleston on Jan. 16. Sunday’s matchup will be the fifth consecutive year that ETSU has faced off against Appalachian State. The Bucs won the four previous meetings during that stretch, including a 5-2 victory last season.
