Bucs take on Akron and No. 66 Winthrop this weekend

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 3, 2016) – Following a four-match road swing, the ETSU women’s tennis team returns home this weekend for a pair of matches. The Bucs will host Akron at noon Friday at the Cedar Crest Racquet Club in Knoxville, Tenn. Following its matchup with the Zips, ETSU will welcome No. 66 Winthrop to the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex for an 11 a.m. match Sunday.

The Bucs enter the weekend with a perfect 9-0 record this season. Collectively, ETSU has been dominant with a 42-5 record in singles and a 19-3 mark in doubles. Among the eight singles players that have appeared in a match this spring, five of them are still undefeated.

Akron comes into Friday’s match with a 9-1 record this spring with the only loss coming against West Virginia. With the nine victories, Akron has nearly matched its win total from last season (11). The Zips are cultivating their success through youth as six of the nine players on their roster are underclassmen.

The 66th-ranked Eagles are 4-1 so far in 2016. Winthrop has victories over Furman, Presbyterian, Xavier and College of Charleston with its only defeat coming against Wake Forest. The Eagles’ top player is the No. 105th-ranked player in the nation, Alice Garcia. Garcia, who is a three-time All-Big South competitor, is 2-1 in singles and 0-2 in doubles play so far this season.
