JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 15, 2016) – The 12-1 ETSU women’s tennis team will return to the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex this week as they host Wofford Wednesday and Western Carolina Sunday. Start times for both SoCon matches are scheduled for 2 p.m.
ETSU, which won a pair of 4-3 road matches last week against North Florida and Mercer, continues to have stellar results this season. Collectively, the Bucs have a singles record of 54-15 in singles matches and boast a 26-7 mark in doubles action.
Freshman Marina Espana (Castellar Del Valles, Spain) continues to be Bucs’ top player this spring with a perfect 11-0 mark in singles play and a 9-2 mark in doubles when teamed with Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece). Senior Ana Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) has also stepped up her play as of late winning her last seven matches to move her record to 9-2.
Wofford enters Wednesday’s match against the Bucs with the second-best winning percentage in the SoCon (.700). The Terriers have won four of their last five matches with the only defeat coming at Florida State on Saturday. Wofford’s top two players so far are Catherine Martin and Kalli Karas who are both 7-3 competing out of the No. 1 and No. 3 singles slots, respectively.
Like Wofford, Western Carolina is 7-3 this spring. All three of WCU’s losses, however, have come in road matches, including a 5-2 loss to UNCG March 4. Stacia Kissell has been one of the main reasons why the Catamounts have gotten out to a fast start as the Latrobe, Pennsylvania native has a 6-2 record in singles and doubles.
