GREENSBORO, N.C. (April 5, 2016) – The ETSU women’s tennis team will hit the road for the final time in the regular season Wednesday as it heads to Greensboro, N.C. for a match against UNCG. ETSU, which is 16-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play, will look to finish its regular season road schedule unbeaten for the first time in program history.
The Bucs are fresh off a 6-1 victory over Samford Sunday. The victory over the Bulldogs was the Bucs’ sixth straight win dating back to March 10. As its 16-1 record would indicate, ETSU has been dominant in both singles and doubles this spring as it holds a team winning percentage of .828 and .800 in those kind of matches.
Individually, the Buccaneers have five different players that have reached double figures in singles victories. Freshman Marina Espana (Castellar Del Valles, Spain) leads the team with 15 wins and has not lost a match this spring. Espana’s 15 wins are the most of any SoCon player in 2016. Senior Ana Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) has also been a major reason for the team’s success as of late going 9-0 in the team’s last 10 matches.
ETSU has been nearly unbeatable this season in doubles as it has won the doubles point in all but two matches this season. The tandem of Espana and Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) pace the team with 13 wins, while Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and Gerbasi have posted a 10-5 record playing out of the No. 1 position.
UNCG has had an up-and-down season in 2016 as it holds an 8-9 record entering Wednesday’s match. Sara Swiderski paces the Spartans with 10 victories with two of those coming against SoCon competition. The Spartans have rolled out 13 different doubles combinations this spring, but the top performing duo has been Masey DeMoss and Jamie Grinberg who have a perfect 2-0 record in SoCon matches.
