SKILLMAN, N.J. (May 9, 2016) – ETSU women’s tennis player Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) was named the Ohio Valley Region ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership award winner by the ITA Monday afternoon. Choo is the second player in program history to receive this honor joining former Buc Tara Bryne, who took home the award in 2009.
“It is definitely a well-deserved award,” ETSU Head Coach Travis Sandlant said. “She has worked above and beyond for this program and ETSU over the last four years. I look forward to seeing her continue her success in her working career.
The ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship award goes to the women’s tennis player who displays dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team’s performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis. The national award winners will be announced Tuesday May 24.
Choo went 16-4 in singles and 11-6 in doubles this season en route to capturing All-SoCon First Team honors in both categories. The Kuching, Malaysia native also helped the Bucs punch their ticket to their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in school history by winning their first ever Southern Conference Championship.
In addition to her work on the court, Choo has been a leader off the court as well volunteering in several community service projects during her ETSU career, while being a consistent member on the Dean’s List. Choo, who posted a 3.98 GPA in her time at ETSU, graduated last weekend with a degree in Computing with multiple concentrations in Information Systems and Information Technology.
Choo and the rest of the Bucs will return to the court Friday afternoon when they take on No. 3 North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Chapel Hill, N.C.
