CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (May 12, 2016) – The ETSU women’s tennis team will make its fifth appearance all-time in the NCAA Tournament Friday when it takes on No. 3 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Scouting the Buccaneers: ETSU comes into the match with the third-seeded Tar Heels with a 20-2 record overall this season. The Bucs earned the Southern Conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament by winning the SoCon Tournament April 22-24. The championship was the program’s first ever in the SoCon after capturing four Atlantic Sun titles in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2014.
ETSU is led by five All-SoCon performers. Senior Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) leads the way for the Bucs with a 16-4 record in singles action and also has an 11-6 mark in doubles play with fellow senior Ana Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela). In addition to Choo and Gerbasi, Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece), Marina Espana (Castellar Del Valles, Spain) and Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) also received All-SoCon honors.
Scouting North Carolina: North Carolina enters the matchup with the Bucs with a record of 29-2 overall and a perfect 14-0 mark in ACC play. The Tar Heels captured the ACC regular season championship and also won the conference tournament title.
The Tar Heels have three players in the Oracle/ITA National Singles Rankings in Hayley Carter, Jessica Aney and Whitney Kay. Carter is the top-ranked player in the latest national rankings with a record of 42-4 this season, while Aney and Kay are No. 57 and No. 41, respectively. Carter and Kay are also the second-ranked doubles team in the nation with a record of 32-5.
