LYNCHBURG, Va. (Feb. 4, 2017) – After going up 3-0 at Liberty on Saturday, the ETSU women’s tennis team slipped 4-3 to the Flames at the Cook Tennis Complex in Lynchburg, Va.
The Bucs continued to stay hot in doubles play as the Blue and Gold took the doubles point. Marina Guinart (Castellar Del Valles, Spain) and Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) took the first doubles match for the Bucs. All tied at 1-1 in doubles competition, ETSU’s Alory Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) looked to keep their perfect doubles record intact (3-0), and the duo did so as they won 7-6 (7-3) to give the Bucs the doubles point.
With a 1-0 lead, Guinart extended that lead as she defeated Aleksandra Panchenko of Liberty in straight sets (6-2, 6-0). Following her teammate, No. 95 Markesini defeated her opponent in straight sets as well (7-5, 6-1) playing out of the No.1 position.
Even though down 3-0, Liberty changed the momentum quickly as it took the next three singles matches. The Blue and Gold had its best chance to put the match away when Pereira won the second set to knot the head-to-head match at 1-1. However, Anna Dollar won the third set 6-2 to take the singles point away from Pereira.
Liberty put the match away in the final singles match as Mariely Hassey upended Sara Djurdjevic (Ljublijana, Slovenia) in her first match for the Blue and Gold.
ETSU moves to 2-2 on the year, and Liberty continues its perfect season as the Flames advance to 2-0.
The Bucs will take a week off before they take on ACC member NC State in Raleigh on Feb. 12. The match is set for 6 p.m.
