RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 12, 2017) – For her 24th straight singles match, Marina Guinart (Castellar Del Valles, Spain) came out on top and maintained her singles winning streak as she is now 24-0 while with the Bucs, but the ETSU women’s tennis team fell to NC State on Sunday in Raleigh, N.C. 5-2.
The highlight of the dual match was Guinart continuing her singles match winning streak. As a sophomore, she has won 24 consecutive singles matches since she walked on ETSU’s campus last season. Guinart defeated Claudia Wiktorin in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Three of her five singles matches this season have come by way of straight sets.
One streak did end in Raleigh as Yi Chi Ma’s (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) and Alory Pereira’s (Sao Paulo, Brazil) doubles winning streak came to an end as they were defeated 6-2. However, Jayde Viccars (Glen Waverly, Australia) and Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) nearly picked up their first win in doubles play this year, but since North Carolina State claimed the doubles point before the match ended, the game went unfinished with the duo leading 5-3.
To leave ETSU on a high note, Esguerra won her second singles match of the year as she defeated Bianca Moldovan in a tough match. Esguerra won in three sets 7-6 (7-1), 2-6, 10-6.
The Wolfpack move to 8-2, while ETSU falls to 2-3 on the year.
The Bucs next match will be at home as they host Murray State on Feb. 19 at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex at 9 a.m.
