ELON, N.C. (September 15, 2017) – The ETSU women’s tennis team finished day one of the Elon Fall Invitational. Five girls traveled to the invitational.
In the Maroon Singles Draws, Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) won a three-set match 6-2, 4-6 6-4 to advance to take on Yasbel Gonzalez-Rico of Emory College. Markesini’s match is set for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Alory Periera (Sao Paulo, Brazil) also advanced. Periera took on Nancy Bridges from UNCG and won 6-2, 6-1. She will take on Iryna Vardanian of Coastal Carolina on Saturday also at 10:00 a.m.
In the Gold Singles Draws, Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) and Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) competed. Esguerra faced Sophie Adams from UNCG and after pushing a tough battle, she fell 7-6 (5), 6-4. Ma took on Defne Olcay from Emory and fell 6-4, 6-4. Esguerra and Ma will both play on Saturday at 11:45 a.m.
Jayde Viccars (Glen Waverley, Australia) played in the Powell Singles Draws. Viccars lost 6-2, 6-1 to Celeste Matute from UNCW. She has a bye and will resume singles play on Sunday.
In the Maroon Doubles Draws, Ioanna Markesini and Alory Periera competed. They won a close match of 8-6 and will play at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Jayde Viccars and Melissa Esguerra competed in the Gold Doubles Draws. After dropping an 8-4 match, they will also play at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
The Bucs will continue play at the Elon Fall Invitational on Saturday. Doubles play begins at 9:00 a.m., while singles play begins at 10:00 a.m.
