ELON, N.C. (September 16, 2017) – The ETSU women’s tennis team concluded play at the annual Elon Fall Invitational on Sunday.
Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) beat Elon’s Kirsten Ward in the Maroon Singles Draws, while Alory Pereira (Sao Paul, Brazil) came in third place after defeating Sabrina Barisano, 6-3, 6-3.
In the Gold Singles Draws, Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) won her match 6-2, 6-3. Esguerra won against Sasha Hartje from Emory College. Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) pushed a third set in her match today, but fell 4-6, 7-5, 10-3.
After receiving a bye yesterday, Jayde Viccars (Glen Waverley, Australia) played Stephanie Taylor from Emory College and also dropped her match, 6-2, 6-1.
In Doubles play, Markesini and Pereria continued to stay unbeaten. They won 8-3 to win the championship. This is the first time the duo has played with each other. Last season, Markesini combined with graduating senior Marina Espana and Pereira combined with Yi Chi Ma.
Viccars and Esguerra played in the finals, but came up just short after losing their match, 8-2.
The ETSU women’s tennis team will resume play at the ITA All American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif, which begins on September 30.
