MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (October 12, 2017) – The ETSU women’s tennis team kicked off day one at the Ohio Valley Regional Championships in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Singles and doubles draws were played today.
In the doubles main draw, the combination of Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) and Alory Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) first beat Tennessee State’s doubles duo 8-2. They then advanced to beat Ball State 8-3. On Friday, they will take on Tennessee at 6:00 p.m. (ET).
Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) and Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) were the other duo that combined in doubles for ETSU. They took on Tennessee, but fell 8-3.
In the singles draw, Markesini was the only Buccaneer to receive a bye today, so she will take on Natalie De Ugarte from Western Kentucky on Friday at 11:30 a.m. (ET). Pereira competed against Katerina Popova and fell after pushing a three set match of 7-6, 2-6, 6-1. Yi Chi Ma also had quite the battle with a three set match as well, but she dropped her match 6-1, 5-7, 6-0. Jayde Viccars (Glen Waverley, Australia) and Melissa Esguerra were the last two Bucs to compete in the singles draws. Unfortunately, they also lost as Viccars fell 6-1, 6-2 to Lesedi Jacobs from Kentucky and Esguerra lost 6-4, 7-5 to Indiana’s Caitlin Bernard.
