SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Oct. 28, 2017) –The ETSU women’s tennis team kicked off play at the Wofford Invitational. Three Buccaneers competed in the draws.
Alory Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was up first for the Bucs after defeating ASU’s Shelby King, 6-1, 6-2. Pereira then moved on to win a three set match of 4-6, 6-3, 10-3 after beating RU’s Lotti Meszaros. She continued to dominate when she defeated Nina Sorkin from Virginia Tech to win the gold singles 6-1, 6-4.
Up next for the Bucs was Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) who took on Drousile Dzeubou from RU. Esguerra won her match 7-6 (6), 6-4, but then fell to Bridget Harding from Emory, 6-3, 6-3. On Saturday, she played Cassidy Hicks from Wofford, but fell 6-4, 6-3.
Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) then played Lauren Watson-Steele from UNCA and won 6-4, 6-4. She then battled in a hard 6-4, 4-6, 16-14 match, but was defeated by Daniela Lopez from Emory. Ma also had a consolation match on Saturday as she fell 7-6, 6-0 to Wofford’s Daniela Naupari.
In doubles action, Yi Chi Ma and Melissa Esguerra combined to defeat Meszaros and Sayer from RU with a score of 7-6 (5). They then beat GSU’s duo 7-5 and won the gold doubles with a 6-4 win against Emory.
The Wofford Invitational concludes the fall action for the ETSU women’s tennis team. They will open the regular season on Jan. 26 at Virginia Tech.
