ETSU improves to 3-3

AKRON, Ohio. (Feb. 17, 2018) – The ETSU women’s tennis team picked up a big win on the road against Big 12 opponent, West Virginia on Saturday morning at the LaTuchie Tennis Center. A great team effort gave the Bucs a 6-1 win to improve to 3-3, as the Mountaineers fall to 2-3.

In doubles action, West Virginia was able to finish first with a 6-2 win in the No. 1 doubles spot, but the Bucs fought back to win back-to-back matches to clinch the doubles point. Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) and Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) combined to defeat West Virginia’s Paula Goetz and Lyn Yuen Choo 6-3. Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) and Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) then won 6-4 over Abigail Rosiello and Kirsten White at the No. 3 doubles spot.

ETSU continued their momentum into singles play. Melissa Esguerra defeated Abigail Rosiello 6-1, 6-1, followed by Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) who won 6-4, 6-2 against Christina Jordan. Freshman Alejandra Morales improved to 3-3 on the season with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Kirsten White. Senior Alory Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) continues to stay undefeated in No.2 singles after she defeated Anne-Sophie Courteau in a three-set battle. Pereira came behind to win 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. The Mountaineers were able to grab one point at the No. 4 singles, but Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga closed out the match with a 7-5, 2-6, 10-8 win, as the Bucs would win 6-1.

“We had a great team effort,” said head coach Ricky Rojas. “I’m very proud of our girls and the way they competed. Everyone played a key role today. I look forward in seeing this team again tomorrow.”

The Bucs will take on the Akron Zips tomorrow (Feb. 18) at 10:00 a.m.
