JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 23, 2018) – In their first match played on their home court at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex, the ETSU women’s tennis team defeated the Miami RedHawks 6-1 on Friday afternoon. ETSU improves to 4-5, as the RedHawks drop to 4-6.
Miami took the first doubles match, the Bucs won back-to-back matches to win the overall doubles point. Alory Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) defeated Nelli Ponomareva and Melati Devi 6-4 and then Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) and Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) won 6-2 to clinch the point.
Morales kept things going with a 6-4, 6-1 win in the No. 6 spot to give the Bucs an edge. Ioanna Markesini then defeated Nelli Ponomareva 6-3, 6-3. In the No. 2 spot, Alory Pereira battled through a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win over Milana Lysova to give the Bucs a 3-0 edge. Emily Struble from Miami took the RedHawk’s only point of the day with a 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 win against Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga. The Bucs then won three matches in a row. Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) won 7-6, 7-6 against Priyana Kalita. Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) won 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 against Lena Babunski and then Alejandra Morales defeated Melati Devi 6-4, 6-1.
“We had a great team effort. Proud of our girls and how they carried themselves today beating a very good Miami team. Everyone played a big role today and I can’t wait to see them again Sunday against WKU.”
The Bucs return to action this Sunday, Feb. 25 at the Bristol Racquet Club. First serve is set for 9:30 a.m.
