BRISTOL, Tenn. (Feb. 25, 2018) – With back-to-back home matches, Western Kentucky edged the Bucs 4-3 on Sunday morning at the Bristol Racquet Club, handing the Bucs their first loss at home. ETSU drops to 4-6, while WKU improves to 4-3.
The Bucs came from behind to the take the doubles point. WKU won the first match, but Alory Pereira and Ioanna Markesini defeated Moki Ito and Monica Malinen 7-5. To clinch the doubles point, Yi Chi Ma and Melissa Esguerra defeated Violetta Shatalova and Elpida Malamou 6-4.
WKU evened the match after Monica Malinen defeated Yi Chi Ma 6-3, 6-0, but the Bucs won back-to-back matches to give them an advantage. Pascual-Larrinaga defeated Violetta Shatalova 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Alory Pereira came back from being behind to win a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 match over Elpida Malamou. WKU’s Moka Ito defeated Ioanna Markesini in a tight battle. Markesini fell 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6). WKU evened the match with a three-set win after Natalia De Ugarte took a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 win against Esguerra. In the last match of the day, Morales took the first set, but Cindy Oest came from behind to win two sets in a row to clinch the win for WKU.
The Bucs are on the road for their next five matches. They will kick of conference play next Saturday, March 3 at Chattanooga. The match is set to start at 5:00 p.m.
