JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (March 4, 2018) – The ETSU women’s tennis team kicked off one of two matches in the sunshine state. UNF defeated ETSU 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex. UNF improves to 8-4, as the Bucs fall to 4-8 in overall season records.
The Ospreys swept doubles matches to take an early lead and won four straight singles matches to grab a win. Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) finished first in singles, but fell to Florencia Rossi 6-2, 6-1. Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) was defeated 6-3, 6-2 against Valentia Mariotto. Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) and Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) would lose back-to-back matches at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Senior Alory Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) gave the Bucs their only point of the day after she defeated Rafaela Gomez 6-1, 7-5. Pereira not only picked up the only win for the Bucs, but she also earned her first win at the No. 1 singles so far this season. Lastly, Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) put up quite the fight for her first match at the No. 2 singles. Markesini was defeated by Eva Nyikos 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 1-0 (11-9) after a long battle.
The Bucs will play their second match in the sunshine state this Wednesday, March 7. ETSU will play UCF with first serve set for 5:00 p.m.
