Ioanna Markesini won both of her matches, totaling 101 career wins at ETSU

GREENSBORO. N.C. (March 18, 2018) – After playing their fifth straight match on the road, the Bucs concluded their longest road swing of the season. ETSU capped off their weekend with their second conference win after downing the UNCG Spartans on the road 6-1. ETSU improves to 6-9 and 2-1 in the SoCon, while UNCG drops to 4-7 and 1-1 in the SoCon.

UNCG grabbed the first match with a 6-2 win to kick off doubles play. The Bucs would fight back and win back-to-back matches to clinch the point. Ioanna Markesini (Athens Greece) and Alory Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) would even doubles play out with a 6-2 win against Blaine Boaz and Alice Turner. With this victory, Markesini notched her 100th career win at ETSU. Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) and Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) clinched the doubles point after taking down Nancy Bridges and Emily Ory 6-4. 

UNCG’s Brianna Gomez took the first singles point with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jayde Viccars (Glen Waverley, Australia). Nothing was going to stop the Bucs, as they would win five straight singles matches to win the match. Alory Pereira picked up her 10th singles match of the season after defeating Nancy Bridges 6-4, 6-4. Markesini continued her winning ways to notch her 101th career win after defeating Alice Taylor 6-2, 6-4. Senior Melissa Esguerra won 7-6, 6-3 against Corrine Blythe. Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga and Yi Chi Ma gave the Bucs their last two victories of the match. Pascual-Larrinaga won 7-6, 6-3, while Ma battled through a three set match of 7-5, 1-6, 6-0 to conclude the Bucs’ conference win.

“We had a great team effort today,” said head women’s tennis coach Ricky Rojas. “Everyone competed extremely well. I’m happy for our girls and I look forward to seeing them compete again this week.”

The ETSU women’s tennis team returns home to host Western Carolina. The match is set for Wednesday, March 21 at 2:00 p.m. at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex.
