Bucs notch 5-2 win against VCU in last road match

ETSU finishes the season on the road with a 4-7 record

RICHMOND, Va. (March 24, 2018) –  The ETSU women’s tennis team played their last match on the road after notching a 5-2 victory against VCU on Saturday morning at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. The Bucs went 4-7 when playing on the road season, but improve their overall record to 8-9. The Bucs have now extended their winning streak to four, while VCU drops to 11-3.

ETSU started the match off strong by winning the overall doubles point. Senior leaders Alory Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) gave the Bucs a 6-4 win to start things off. The underclassmen followed in their footsteps after Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) and Andrea Pascual Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) defeated their opponents 6-4, to clinch the point.

Ioanna Markesini kept things going for the Bucs after returning to the No. 1 singles spot. She defeated Anna Rasmussen to pick up a 6-3, 6-3 win to give the Bucs a 2-0 start. Pascual-Larrinaga also shifted her momentum into singles action with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Marina Alcaide. VCU’s Kanako Yano was able to get a point for the Rams after defeating Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) 6-4, 6-0. Pereira clinched the match for the Bucs with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Paola Delgado. At the No. 6 singles, Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) grabbed the fifth point for the Bucs in a three-set win. She won 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 against Gabriela Araujo. VCU was able to get one last point after Nourmea Witmus took a three-set win over Morales, but it wasn’t enough, as the Bucs would come away with the overall win.

The Bucs will return to Johnson City to play their last four matches at home. First up is Wofford, which will be played next Saturday, March 31 at 2:00 p.m.
