JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 31, 2018) – The ETSU women’s tennis team extended their win streak to five after earning a 6-1 win over the Wofford Terriers on Saturday afternoon at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex. The Bucs improve to 9-9 and 4-1 in the SoCon, while Wofford drops to 8-7 and 0-4 in the SoCon.
The Terriers jumped out to an early start after clinching the doubles point. Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) and Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) were able to take a match after defeating Curran Carver and Brittney Wilbur 6-2. The win wouldn’t be enough, as Wofford would win back-to-back doubles matches.
Nothing was going to stop the Bucs from winning after they won six consecutive singles matches. Ma stayed undefeated on the day after she tied the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Samantha Russell. Seniors Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) and Alory Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) gave the Bucs back-to-back wins to take the lead. Markesini won 6-1, 6-3 over Jenna Vroman, while Pereira won 6-3, 6-3 over Cassidy Hicks. Freshman Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) would clinch the match for ETSU after defeating Curran Carver 6-2, 6-3. Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) won her match 6-4, 6-3 after she defeated Lauren Reid. To conclude ETSU’s sweep of singles, Melissa Esguerra wrapped up play to stay undefeated on the day as well. She won 6-3, 7-6 over Brittney Wilbur.
The Bucs will take a week off before returning to action next Saturday, April 7 when they host the Furman Paladins at 2:00 p.m.
