Bucs cap off SoCon regular season with sweep over Samford

ETSU finishes 5-2 in SoCon action

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 8, 2018) –  The ETSU women’s tennis team concluded SoCon regular season play with a 7-0 win over Samford on Sunday afternoon at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex. The win helped the Bucs improve to 10-10 and 5-2 in the SoCon, while handing Samford their first conference loss of the season.

The Bucs had an impressive day all around sweeping all of their matches. Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) and Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) kicked things off for the Bucs with a 6-1 win over Arianna Beltrame and Grace Jennings. Clinching the doubles point for the Bucs was Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) and Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) who earned a 6-2 win over Holly Horsfall and Elsa Pool. To conclude the doubles sweep, Alory Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) defeated Roos van der Zwaan and Ellie Gerlach 6-4. 

ETSU continued to dominate in singles play. Morales gave the Bucs a 2-0 advantage with a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 4 spot. Her doubles partner, Pascual-Larrinaga earned her sixth straight win after defeating Holly Horsfall 6-2, 6-0. Senior Alory Pereira clinched the match for the Bucs at the No. 1 spot. She won 6-3, 6-4 over Roos van der Zwaan. Yi Chi Ma and Melissa Esguerra each had three-set wins today. Ma came back to defeat Grace Jennings 3-6, 7-6, 10-7, while Esguerra won 4-6, 6-0, 10-5 over Arianna Beltrame. Markesini completed the ETSU sweep after defeating Ellie Gerlach 7-5, 7-6.

“We had a tough loss Friday and today we bounced back with a dominant win,” said head coach Ricky Rojas. “I’m extremely proud of our whole team and the way we are competing. I can’t wait to see them next Saturday. It’s also our senior day and we get to recognize our four seniors that have done a lot for our program.”

The Bucs will conclude the regular season next Saturday, April 14 when they host Appalachian State for senior day. The ETSU women’s tennis team will honor Ioanna Markesini, Alory Pereira, Jayde Viccars, and Melissa Esguerra. The match is set for 1:00 p.m.
