Women’s tennis tops Appalachian State 5-2 on senior day

ETSU earns the #2seed in the SoCon Tournament

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 14, 2018) –  The ETSU women’s tennis team concluded the regular season on a high note after topping Appalachian State 5-2 on senior day. The Bucs improve their overall record to 11-10, while the Mountaineers drop to 10-10. In the middle of doubles and singles action, the Bucs honored their four seniors, Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece), Alory Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia), and Jayde Viccars (Glen Waverley, Australia) for a tremendous four years.

 The Bucs started the day off strong sweeping all three matches in doubles. Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) and Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) picked up the first win after defeating Emily Gaskins and Sandra Anglesjo. The senior duo of Jayde Viccars and Melissa Esguerra clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win. To conclude the doubles sweep, senior pair Alory Pereira and Ioanna Markesini also earned a 7-5 win.

Alejandra Morales gave the Bucs the singles start they needed after picking up a 7-5, 6-2 win over Taylor Bygrave. The Mountaineers were able to grab a point after Sandra Anglesjo defeated Jayde Viccars 6-1, 6-1. Senior Ioanna Markesini was able to pick up a win on senior day after defeating Teodora Sevo 6-3, 6-1. Morales kept things going for the Bucs after she defeated Heidi Swope 6-1, 7-6 to clinch the match. Senior Esguerra also earned a win on senior day to give the Bucs their last point of the match. She won 6-1, 7-5 over Rebecca Morse. To conclude the match, Maria Jose Zacarias defeated Alory Pereira 6-4, 1-6, 12-10.

“I’m so proud of this senior class and everything they have brought to this program,” said head coach Ricky Rojas. “They’ve represented ETSU the right way. Ioanna, Alory, Jayde, and Mel are winners and tremendous people. They embody everything you want in a student-athlete and that showed again today with their tremendous fight against a good App State team. I can’t wait for next week when we go to the conference tournament. Go Bucs!”

ETSU has earned the No. 2 in the SoCon tournament, which begins next Friday, April 20 in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Bucs will take on No. 7 Wofford.
