JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 19, 2018) – After claiming the No. 2 seed in the Southern Conference Tournament, the ETSU women’s tennis team will open the quarterfinal round on Friday, April 20 in Chattanooga, Tenn. against No. 7 Wofford at 3:00 p.m.
About the Bucs
ETSU concluded the regular season last week with an 11-10 overall record and a 5-2 conference mark. The Bucs are the No. 2 seed for the third straight year. This year’s matchup is identical to last year’s, as the Bucs face No. 7 Wofford for the second consecutive year.
The Bucs received five postseason awards, which was announced on Wednesday by the league offices. Alory Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) each claimed First Team honors in singles. The pair also earned First Team honors in doubles. Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) was placed on the Second Team at the No. 5 singles spot. Esguerra also received recognition in doubles when combining with Yi Chi Ma. The duo earned Second Team honors at the No. 2 doubles spot. Rounding out the awards for the Bucs was Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile), who was named to the All-Freshman Team.
Aside from postseason awards, Pereira and Markesini lead the Bucs with the most wins in singles. Morales and Esguerra each have ten wins on the season to help the Bucs to a 66-54 record in singles. In doubles action, ETSU has a record of 34-25.
The Terriers finished the regular season with a 9-9 record and went 1-6 in the SoCon. Wofford last met the Bucs in Johnson City and fell to the Bucs 6-1. The Terriers lone conference win came from UNCG after the Terriers edged the Spartans 4-3.
The Terrier’s Jenna Vroman received multiple SoCon postseason awards. She was named the Freshman of the Year after collecting a 13-5 record in singles. Vroman eanrned a spot on the All-Freshman Team and the Second Team in singles at the No. 2 spot. Lastly, Vroman and Cassidy Hicks were named to the First Team in doubles after the duo finished with a 13-5 record.
As a team, Wofford holds a 54-54 record in singles and a 30-21 record in doubles.
About the SoCon Tournament
The three-day tournament is being held in Chattanooga, Tenn. at the Champions Club. The semifinal rounds will begin Saturday, April 21 at 2 p.m., and the championship match will be played Sunday, April 22 at 1 p.m.
If the Bucs were to win in the quarterfinals, they will play the winner of No. 3 Samford/No. 6 Western Carolina at 2 p.m. at the Champions Club.
