Freshman Breaks School Track Record

Morgantown, W. Va. -- The East Tennessee track and field team earned several victories at the West Virginia University Classic on Saturday. Freshman Chantelle Vernon (Markham, Ontario) broke the school record in the indoor 60m dash by .22 seconds with a first-place finish (7.64). Vernon's time of 7.64 broke Tracie George's record of 7.68 which was set in 1996. ETSU runners also won the 800m, 4x400m relay and the 400m open. Junior Roseline Addo (Newbury, England) ran a 2:16.05 to win the 800m. The ETSU 4x400m relay team (Ashley Taylor, Jennifer Howard, Roseline Addo, Uloma Nwagbara) finished in 3:53.12 to earn first place. Nwagbara won again this time on her own in the 400m (58.37). Natasha Peyton (Chesterfield, Va.) finished just .08 seconds behind Kenyetta Conway of West Virginia University to take second place (26.59). In the 400m, Howard ran a 58.81 to earn third place and just behind her, Taylor finished in 59.36 to take fourth. Kim Simmons (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished 11th in the 400m with a time of 1:02.96. On the men's side, freshman Brad Yewer (Newbury, England) finished fourth with a time of 2:02.73 in the 800m and second in the 1-mile run (4:30.16). James Grufferty finished in 9:09.02 to take fourth place in the 3000m.
