ETSU standout joins ranks of USA Jr. All-Americans
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (June 16, 2012) – Totaling a personal best 6,976 points in the decathlon on Saturday at the 2012 USA Jr. Outdoor Track and Field Championships, freshman K'Vonte Scott (Virginia Beach, Va.) took fifth place and earned USA Jr. All-American status at Indiana's Robert C. Haugh Track.
Scott, who earned a win in the 400m on Friday along with top fives in the high jump and long jump, posted another top five on Saturday with a fifth place effort in the 1500m clocking in at 4:45.43. The freshman's new career-high point total beat out his previous best by over 300 points. Scott also earned the highest finish in ETSU history at the USA Jr. Outdoor meet, earning USA Jr. All-American honors by finishing among the top six.
"K'Vonte had a good two days of competition," ETSU assistant coach Eli Sunquist said. "He was consistent in all events, which is very important for a decathlete. No event really stood out, so there is a lot of room for improvement in the years to come. I'm very proud of how hard he worked this year, and we are already in the process of settling some very big goals for next year."
Fellow ETSU freshman Adam Chase (Kingsport, Tenn.) will compete in the 3000m steeplechase on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
The Dobyns-Bennett High School product qualified for the USA Juniors by completing the event in 9:32.40 and earning the bronze medal at this year’s Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships.
